Esau Garcia: Ready to Launch

Growing up, 24-year-old Esau Garcia experienced his share of disruption and instability as he was shuffled between his divorced parents’ homes. As a young adult, he was directionless, unsure about what path his life should take. He found himself without stable housing and few skills for securing a good job. That’s when he contacted The Children’s Center of the Antelope Valley to inquire about support available through the WEDO CCAV program for transitional-age youth (TAY).

He began working with a TAY peer support specialist who helped him get a grant for training to become an emergency medical technician (EMT). While he was enrolled in the EMT program, his peer support specialist also assisted him with creating a resume and securing a job that would pay his bills.

After graduating from EMT training, he reconnected with WEDO CCAV to revamp his resume, write a cover letter, and hone his interview skills. He quickly landed a job with a company that provides on-site medical care at concerts and fairs. Then COVID hit, canceling crowded, in-person events.

Jobless, Esau found himself in a precarious situation once again. He stayed with family and sometimes had to sleep in his car. So, he reached out to CCAV once more where he was able to get emergency housing assistance. This was just the boost he needed to ultimately rent his own place in Tehachapi where he is now putting his skills to work as a contact tracer for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“If it wasn’t for CCAV helping me get my EMT license, I wouldn’t have been able to get another job so easily,” Esau remarked. “You really invested in something. I’m valuable to the world, helping the community on the front line.”
